BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A team of archaeologists from the University of Vermont is among researchers who have discovered an ancient fish-trapping facility in the Central American country of Belize.
The network of canals, thought to have been constructed between 2000 to 1900 BCE, was designed to channel annual flood waters into ponds for fish trapping and pre-dates similar structures by a thousand years or more.
The team published its work in the journal Science Advances,
Cat Viglienzoni spoke with Marieka Brouwer Burg, a professor of anthropology at UVM and co-director of the team.
