Plattsburgh commission to study new governance model

PLATTSBURGH, N,Y. (WCAX) – A new study underway will look at possible changes to how the city of Plattsburgh is governed.

Outgoing Mayor Chris Rosenquest says he formed a charter commission group to explore what changes would need to happen if the city’s government moved from a strong mayor model to a city manager one.

Several people who will sit on the commission served on a similar one a decade ago when voters rejected the proposal. Their new findings will head to the Board of Elections and then onto the ballot.

Rosenquest says the change could benefit the city. “Having somebody who has business background or who has executive background or public policy or public administration background to ensuring the future and livelihood of our city,” he said.

Rosenquest, who has butted heads with members of the Common Council over development plans and other issues, says the commission has about two years to present its findings.
