Search for missing hiker in NY on hold due to safety concerns

NEWCOMB, N.Y. (WCAX) – The search for a missing hiker in New York’s Adirondacks has been put on hold due to safety concerns.

Leo DuFour, 22, of Quebec, set off on the Allen Mountain Trailhead in Newcomb on Nov. 29 and hasn’t been seen since.

Earlier this week, authorities said the search for DuFour had become a recovery mission.

Now, forest rangers in Essex County say it’s unsafe to keep searching the area because of the dangerous terrain, conditions and weather.

While rangers say they are committed to bringing DuFour home, they say people should not search Allen Mountain at this time.

Monday, New York forest rangers said they searched nearly 400 miles by foot in deep snow and harsh winter conditions, and still haven’t found DuFour.
