MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont saw an influx of out-of-state residents moving to the Green Mountains last year.
The Vermont Treasurer’s Office says the state had a net gain of 7,500 residents moving to the state, more than double from 2022. The majority of new residents came from Massachusetts, followed by Colorado and Connecticut.
For comparison, during the pandemic in 2021, Vermont experienced a net in-migration of 14,548 people.
Treasurer Mike Pieciak says that remote work flexibility and outdoor recreation opportunities have helped attract new residents, adding that they have also increased the existing housing crisis. “More people living in Vermont means we have more revenue to help shoulder the cost of providing high-quality education and other important investments in the economy,” Pieciak said in a statement. “At the same time, more people moving to Vermont puts pressure on our housing market, because we are not building fast enough to meet the demand. This drives up housing costs across the board and makes it less affordable to live here.”
