Chinese woman caught smuggling turtles into Canada to be deported

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Chinese woman caught trying to smuggle more than two dozen turtles from a Vermont lake into Canada last summer will not face additional jail time.

Authorities say Wan Yee Ng in June tried to sneak 29 eastern box turtles, a protected species, by kayak from the U.S. into Canada.

She pleaded guilty in October and has been in jail since her arrest.

Her lawyer tells WCAX she was sentenced to time served and will now be deported back to Hong Kong.

She also owes more than $8,000 to cover restitution and the cost of care for the seized turtles.
