MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – The Vermont Attorney General’s Office says two state troopers were justified in the non-fatal shooting of a Rhode Island man this past July.
Troopers say the man who was shot, Brendan Sackal, 30, had a warrant for his arrest out of Rhode Island. After a 60-mile chase, they say he fired a gun at police when they tried to arrest him, and two troopers returned fire, injuring him.
Following its investigation, the AG’s office on Friday said VSP Sergeant Joshua Mikkola and Trooper Richard Berlandy were justified in using deadly force to defend themselves.
The AG says Sackal has since been charged by the Caledonia State’s Attorney’s Office with various crimes including attempted aggravated murder, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of large capacity ammunition feeding devices.
