PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – If you’re eager to get out on the ice we have a warning from local experts.
New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation says it’s never truly safe on the ice but there are steps you can take to make it safer.
They say to check the ice thickness before leaving the shore aiming for four inches of solid clear ice.
However, thickness can vary, even on the same body of water. The state says to be aware of moving water, or areas where a bubbler could be used.
The DEC says ice picks are an important part of the wardrobe, and so are your boots.
“You’re going to want good footwear so as well as insolates boots make sure you’ve got something like spikes or crampons with you,” said N.Y. Forest Ranger Ashly Carabetta.
The DEC says local bait and tackle shops are a great resource for finding out where ice is safe.
They also recommend fishing with family and friends and letting someone know where youre going before you head out.
