Man arrested in supermarket robbery to remain behind bars

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – A man accused of stealing a car and robbing a Vermont grocery store will remain behind bars for now.

St. Albans police say they found Travis Merritt, 44, sitting in a stolen car in the town of St. Albans just before 5 p.m. Saturday.

Officers later connected Merritt to a Christmas Eve assault and robbery at the Hannaford Supermarket in the Highgate Commons Shopping Plaza.

In court on Monday, Vt. Superior Court Judge Alison Arms imposed a $1,000 cash surety bond for Merritt, saying he is a flight risk and has four prior failures to appear.

According to Vermont’s inmate tracker on Tuesday, Merritt remained detained at the Northwest State Correctional Facility.
