Adirondack Loon Center rescues iced-in loons over the holidays

SARANAC LAKE, New York (WWNY) – Three loons were saved over the holidays.

According to the Adirondack Center for Loon Conservation (ACLC), calls came in on December 23 to report iced-in loons on Paradox Lake in the Adirondacks.

When volunteers scouted the lake later that day, they spotted four loons iced-in.

On December 24th a rescue team gathered at Paradox Lake, where now only three loons remained. It is assumed the fourth loon was able to fly away on its own.

The rescue team used nets to capture the trapped loons. Two were successfully netted on December 24 while the third loon was rescued on December 26.

The rescued loons were examined, measured, banded, and released on Lake Champlain where the open water would allow them to feed and take off to migrate to the coast for the winter.
