GUILDHALL, Vt. (WCAX) – A 170-year-old courthouse is on its way to a full makeover.
Officials say the Essex County courthouse is in desperate need of repairs.
The court’s assistant judges have submitted a zoning permit application for plans to create an addition that structurally connects the meeting house to the courthouse.
The addition is aimed to improve accessibility, safety, and security for courthouse visitors and staff. the renovation is worth $3 million, the money coming from the legislature.
“The county courthouse in Essex County has a rich history. A very long tradition of serving the citizens of the county and providing a place where they can access justice. It is really important that we maintain those spaces,” said attorney Sarah Buxton.
The new model for the building will be presented to the planning committee on Wednesday.
