New funding aims to expand child care in New York

ALBANY, N.Y. (WCAX) – Finding good reliable childcare can be a labor, but the Empire State is trying to change that.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul earmarked 110 million dollars to help build childcare centers in the state.

The child care construction fund helps add more facilities, and repair existing ones, especially in child care deserts.

It would also create a substitute pool, to help providers find trusted and vetted professionals to fill in when needed.

Hochul said the state has programs to make child care more affordable but they have a capacity problem.

“That sounds nice on paper, but if you’re in a childcare desert, it doesn’t matter. So let’s build more. Let’s have the ambition to build more facilities and to populate them with more nurturing teachers and teams to support them,” said Hochul.

Hochul will also gather experts to find a sustainable way to achieve universal child care.

According to the governor, it is 155% more expensive to put your child in childcare than it is to send them to a public college in the state of New York.
