New warming shelter opens in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Efforts to protect Burlington’s homeless population come to fruition today, as a new warming shelter opens its doors.

For months now, Burlington organization COTS has been working to open the doors of the shelter. It’s housed in the old Social Security office on Pearl Street.

The shelter will have overnight capacity for 30 people once service begins this Wednesday, January 15. Officials expect the shelter will remain open until the end of April.

COTS already operates a day shelter on nearby North Ave. These two shelters will operate hand-in-hand.

Though the shelter won’t begin operating until January 15, an opening celebration will be held at the new site, 58 Pearl Street, on Monday, January 13 at 11:30 a.m.
