Plattsburgh opens up search for new police chief

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y (WCAX) – The search is on for Plattsburgh’s next police chief.

Plattsburgh Mayor Wendell Hughes opened up the application process Wednesday, nearly four months after former Chief Peter Mitchell retired. The previous search took at least three years.

Hughes says they are looking within and outside of the department. Internal candidates eyeing the job must be permanently employed with the department and have been a lieutenant or captain for at least four months.

“Just looking for somebody that is community-oriented, somebody that knows today’s policing — and gotta have the mental health portion. You gotta be well versed with mental health today and addiction,” the mayor said.

Applications are due at the end of the month.
