Sen. Welch pushes for residential reentry program

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Senator from our region asks the US attorney general nominee about what she’ll do for Vermont.

In Pamela Bondi’s confirmation hearing, Vermont senator Peter Welch pressed her about incoming President Trump’s threats against political opponents.

He also pushed for how she would work with Governor Scott to appoint the US Attorney for Vermont.

One place Welch and Bondi found common ground was bringing a residential re-entry program to Vermont to help people recently released from prison get acclimated.

“Our state and Hawaii are the only two states without it. Our justice system and officials believe that we need it. And I seek your energetic assistance in helping us get that Residential Reentry Program,” said Sen. Welch.

“So, we must do everything we can when people are in prison to rehabilitate them for when they get out. And that is why reentry is so vital,” said Bondi.

Another focus for Welch during the hearing was protecting Vermonters from rip-offs from things like overprescribing and overbilling.
