Vt. Red Cross volunteer heads to California

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Folks devastated by California fires get a helping hand from the green mountains.

At least 25 people have died in the fires burning across Los Angeles with many others losing homes or pets.

That’s where Moretown’s Cheri Lundblad is heading on Thursday, to to facilitate meals among the masses.

Lundblad joins over 400 American Red Cross workers already stationed in California. They’re providing food, shelter, emotional support, and recovery efforts to over 750 evacuees in Red Cross shelters.

“I hope to bring them hope. That’s my big thing, is give them some hope that there is a future ahead. Right now it’s bumpy, it’s rocky, but they will get through this… Making them feel better with a hug, with food, with whatever I can do, and it’s something that makes me happy too,” said Lundblad.

This will be the 72-year-old’s 48th disaster response with Red Cross.

On Friday, we’ll tell you about another Vermont volunteer on the ground in California and a native Californian turned Vermonter watching fires creep closer to her loved ones back home.
