BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Experts say there’s more to staying warm in the dangerous cold than just dressing right.
The temperature is dropping below zero in parts of our region, and the wind chill makes it worse.
New Hampshire’s Department of Safety says between now and Thursday, residents should take extra steps to stay safe.
According to that department, with wind chills near 25 below zero, you can get frostbite in 15 minutes. At 30 below, you can get hypothermia in just about 10 minutes.
They recommend staying home and avoiding travel as much as you can.
If you do leave the house, bring an emergency kit in your car and layer up with loose clothes, a hat, scarf, and mittens.
Another important note – don’t use your gas stove or oven for heat.
If you or a family member needs shelter, call 211 to find the closest available site.
