NY prison workers sent to hospital for possible exposure to unknown substance

MALONE, N.Y. (WCAX) – Twenty staff members at the Upstate Correctional Facility in Northern New York are recovering after being sent to the hospital for possible exposure to an unknown substance.

Officials say Wednesday night in Malone, an inmate who was being transported to the hospital became aggressive with staff. Soon after, each person who came into contact with that inmate got sick and went to the hospital.

Despite no known hazardous materials being found, Narcan was administered to some staffers.

A union rep for corrections officers believes exposure to some type of synthetic drug is what caused the symptoms.

The staff members included 12 Correction officers, seven nurses and an office assistant. All are expected to be OK.

The investigation into what happened is ongoing.
