Sen. Sanders calls out misinformation surrounding vaccines

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – A Vermont leader is touting vaccines as more and more people raise concerns about their safety and efficacy.

Senator Bernie Sanders gathered experts in Washington this week to detail the scientific achievements for vaccines.

He says over the past 50 years, vaccines have saved more than 150 million people’s lives around the world.

According to the CDC, over the past 30 years in the US, routine childhood vaccines have prevented over a million deaths and more than 500 million cases of illness.

“But in an era of massive misinformation campaigns and growing distrust, it is vital that we have an honest conversation with doctors, scientists, and nurses about the importance of vaccines. What concerns me very much is that we are at serious risk in this country of seeing the return of diseases that we haven’t seen in decades as a result of fewer people getting vaccinated,” said Sen. Sanders.

Wednesday’s roundtable before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee included doctors from across the country to address any misinformation about vaccines and talk about their efficacy.
