WINOOSKI, Vt. (WCAX) – A new initiative from the Winooski Historical Society highlighting the history of the Onion City.
The society is selling historic building markers.
The plaques will say ‘Winooski Preservation’ and the year in which the building or home was built. If your building is more than 50 years old, a hundred dollars will get you a locally made plaque and a brief history of the building compiled by a volunteer who will share photos, deeds, and any other documentation they find.
Members of the historical society say that a change in zoning policies and the development of new housing in Winooski has threatened some historical properties.
“Part of this project is to kind of help raise awareness about our historic resources,” Winooski Historical Society President Joe Perron said. “These buildings many of them have irreplaceable materials and craftsmanship that encompass the city’s heritage, so we just want to promote an awareness of that and an interest in that as well.”
The historical society says that they’ve already received 11 applications for plaques. This will be an ongoing initiative, which means there’s no end date for when people can apply.
