Sen. Welch pushes for USAID longevity

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – The Trump administration is dismantling an agency from the inside out and Senator Peter Welch calls on Congress to step in.

President Trump announced plans to pull all US Agencies for International Development workers out of the field worldwide.

It would mark the end of a 6-decade mission to improve American security by fighting hunger and epidemics and funding education across the world.

Billionaire Elon Musk on Trump’s government efficiency team calls spending on overseas programs wasteful.

Senator Peter Welch disagrees.

“It has a relatively small budget – less than 1% of the total federal budget and it has a large responsibility to support humanitarian economic development and governance programs in more than 100 countries,” said Sen. Welch.

Welch says the president can’t dissolve a congressionally appointed agency.

One rumored proposal is moving the agency under the State Department.

The order from the trump administration takes effect Friday night and gives agency employees overseas 30 days to return to the US unless deemed essential.
