PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – State colleges are sounding the alarm as low enrollment and high costs are continuing to impact campuses across New York.

The chancellor of SUNY schools recently sent a letter to lawmakers requesting a boost in funding. The concern is that the system could be looking at a billion-dollar deficit in the next 10 years if nothing changes.

Multiple schools in the North Country have already made cuts, including SUNY Potsdam. Others, like Clinton Community College, are shifting operations to save money. State

Senator Dan Stec, R-Queensbury, says schools may have to explore tuition hikes. “The answer can not be we will subsidize everything to every level that everyone wants. We have done that for years, which is why our budget is bigger than Texas and Florida’s combined,” he said.

SUNY Plattsburgh President Alexander Anyedi said in a statement that his campus does not face many of the challenges other campuses in the system are facing. “We are not at risk in the same way as some and not at the same crossroads,” he wrote.
