SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – An Upper Valley man faces charges after police say he swiped a car from a South Burlington dealership Monday afternoon.

South Burlington Police say employees at Goss Dodge on Shelburne Road were rearranging vehicles when a man, later identified as Shawn Carpenter, 46 of Hartford, hopped into one of the vehicles and took off. They say he smashed into several other cars as he was leaving the lot as well as hitting other drivers as he headed south on Route 7.

Shelburne Police spotted the stolen car a short time later on Lower Old Town Trail in Charlotte. Police say Carpenter was busy trying to break into another car. They say was arrested after brandishing a knife at troopers and officers.

He faces charges including aggravated operation of a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, grossly negligent operation, leaving the scene of an accident, and reckless endangerment.

He’s due in court on Tuesday.
