BURKE, Vt. (WCAX) – Homeowners who rent out their properties in Burke will soon need to register with the town.
Burke’s select board approved the ordinance for a permanent rental registry last week.
Once the town is out of the 60-day petition period, it will become official.
It calls for the owners of short-term rentals to pay $45 per unit annually and $35 for long-term rentals with proof of a development review board permit.
Landowners must reapply every year.
Town officials hope the registry can create a record of rental properties in town.
“Other organizations are coming here to us. They have plans for the area. They like to know lodging-wise what we have for availability. One of the things that we haven’t been able to do is to give them a good number. We have always just been able to guess. So having this registry will really give us the data,” Burke Town Administrator Jim Sullivan said.
Town officials hope to mail out the registry forms to landowners in July.
