BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – New Hampshire Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan says that even a number of her GOP colleagues are skeptical of the impending impeachment trial of U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.
The House voted along mostly party lines last week to impeach Mayorkas for what the GOP claims was his role in the current crisis at the border. It’s only the second time in history that a cabinet secretary has been impeached.
“A number of Republicans in the Senate have said that they don’t think the impeachment effort really rose to the level outlined in the Constitution, so that they think that the Mayorkas impeachment was a political thing and not a substantive one,” Hassan said. She said she plans to listen to the arguments before making up her mind.
The impeachment trial is likely to begin shortly after Senators return to Washington on February 26th.
