Police identify bicyclist killed in South Burlington hit-and-run

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Police have released the name of a bicyclist killed in a hit-and-run crash in South Burlington on Saturday. They say it was Joseph Byrd Allen, 73, of Shelburne.

Investigators say Allen was struck by a car on Shelburne Road at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday. He died at the scene.

The driver took off, but police later arrested Steven Olango, 38, of South Burlington, who they say was the man behind the wheel. Police say Olango’s driver’s license was suspended and his registration was expired.

Olango faces charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident and negligent operation. He will remain behind bars until his formal arraignment on Wednesday.

Police say a South Burlington cruiser at the scene of that crash was struck by a drunk driver and destroyed at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday.

Monday, police released the name of the person behind the wheel of that car. They say it was Bamidele Ladipo, 51, of Shelburne. Police say charges against Ladipo are pending toxicology results.

They say Ladipo was treated at the UVM Medical Center following that crash.
