WINDSOR, Vt. (WCAX) – A big birthday is being celebrated in the Green Mountain State on Monday, but there might be too many candles to fit on a cake.

The state of Vermont turns 233 on March 4.

In 1777, the Vermont Constitution was signed in Windsor. Ten years later, on March 4, 1791, the first Congress admitted Vermont, making it the 14th state in the U.S.

Before it was officially brought into the union, Vermont was an independent republic for 14 years, the only state aside from Texas to go out on its own.

Happy birthday, Vermont!
