MILTON, Vt. (WCAX) – 11-year-old Vada Scott is excited to go to nationals. It’s only the second year of their program, but Xtreme Cheerleaders ‘Supernova’ Team secured a prestigious bid to compete in the national championship cheerleading competition. They have 6 teams altogether ranging from 3 to 18 years old. The girls say being a part of this supportive group is a built-in family.
“Spending quality time with friends and it’s like family, one you do it’s definitely like your family,” 13-year-old Ajanae Canada said.
“Just like supporting each other and like having a family to like to have together and just like share your time with,” 13-year-old Harper Quintin said.
And with a sport that involves a lot of trust — they are creating long-lasting relationships.
“Getting to spend time with people and like creating like bonds and like friendships that don’t go away,” 16-year-old Emma Timmerman said.
This team does not have a private gym. Instead, they practice at cornerstone community church in Milton making the most of the limited space and equipment available to them. They do not have as many resources as other teams, but the girls and coaches have been working hard to reach their goals. The coaches say it’s a big deal for this team to go to nationals this year since it’s their first time. The team will be going to Florida in April.
“I know that we’re super excited. This has never happened for us before ever. So, it’s a huge opportunity and they’re working hard to reach their goal,” Coach Cara Huntley said.
Canada is feeling all of the emotions as she’s preparing for the big competition.
“A little nervous but like really excited like there’s going to be other teams that are going to be good too so it’s like a chance to show off what we’ve worked for and what we’ve done,” she said.
Coach Jennifer Hemingway says she is grateful to be a part of this experience.
“Just to be given this opportunity is awesome to begin with and this team really has worked hard you know they really conquer, work hard, they put in their all into this so it’s pretty exciting,” she said.
