ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) – Forty teams of elementary, middle, and high school students from across Vermont gathered for the 16th annual Jr Iron Chef VT competition.

The teams have been busy preparing for the competition, spending their time in after-school and in-school clubs researching and testing potential recipes with local and seasonal foods.

On Saturday, they worked together to create healthy dishes inspiring their school meal programs as part of the farm-to-school efforts in the state.

“We really envision this as an empowering opportunity for young people and so to have so many family members here to support them is really just the best part of the day,” Vermont Afterschool Executive Director said.

The premiere culinary competition is hosted by Vermont Afterschool.
