
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – At the South Burlington Public Library, Dr. Jolivette shared her poem ‘Five black birds in an Ivorian sky’ and stories about her family’s trip to the west African ivory coast cities. Her poem focused on the migration of recent immigrants to the U.S.., building family within the country, and Black American and African immigrants’ stories. The poem also focuses on raising children who are bi-cultural. It is designed to be inclusive and welcoming to other relationships and experiences.
“We’re living in a time where it’s important for us to get to know each other to or to reintroduce ourselves to our own humanity and to each other’s humanity and in the hopes of alleviating some issues and problems that may exist in the world now and also to just become more in touch with who we are and who other people are and what that means.” said of St. Michael’s College History Instructor, Dr. Jolivette Anderson-Douoning.
She shared her experience of having one parent born in the U.S. and the other born outside of the U.S., and what that means to the parent and to the child.
