COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – Two teens were rescued from freezing waters in Colchester Pond after their canoe capsized on Sunday.

Colchester police say a couple walking their dog on the trails reported the incident around 6 p.m. when they heard people screaming for help. The couple guided the two people in the water to shore and gave them dry clothes to treat hypothermia symptoms.

Colchester police officers and a retired firefighter then gave hypothermic care to the two teens. Rescue crews arrived and transported the teens to the UVM Medical Center where police said they were in stable condition.

Colchester police said they want to warn people even though the weather is getting warmer, the water temperatures are still in the 30s and 40s. They said to always wear a life jacket and tell someone about where you’re going if you do decide to go on the water.
