MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – With spring cleaning beginning for some people, the state is reminding Vermonters of a few guidelines to follow for backyard burning.

Tips from the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation include:

  • Always allow green materials to dry out.
  • Check with fire officials to make sure conditions are safe.
  • Check the air quality before letting smoke fill the air.
  • Get a burn permit from your local fire warden.

“Our best suggestion is to avoid burning altogether and let the materials decompose naturally,” the Vt. DEC’s John Wakefield said in a statement.
