ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – Authorities say a St. Albans man now faces manslaughter and other charges connected to a fatal crash last June.
Jon Schurger, 22, was in court Wednesday stemming from the fatal crash that killed Carson Smith, 16, of Berkshire.
Police say the Berkshire teen was intoxicated and also impaired by other drugs when he crashed his pickup truck on Water Tower Road in Berkshire and died from his injuries. Police say Schurger, along with Dylon Smith, 22, of Enosburgh — who is not related to Carson — bought alcohol for an underaged party in Richford that Smith attended.
Schuger was initially charged only with furnishing alcohol to minors and enabling consumption by minors causing death. On Wednesday, authorities added additional charges of manslaughter, contributing to juvenile delinquency, and two additional counts of sale or furnishing to minors.
Dylon Smith was charged as an accessory in the felony.
Police say the case has been transferred to the Washington County State’s Attorney because of a conflict of interest.
