WASHINGTON D.C. (WCAX) – Senator Peter Welch is calling on regulations for big tech to keep your data safe.
In a consumer protection and data security hearing last week, the Vermont senator outlined a move to protect customers from cyber security risks.
He said an independent federal agency should be established to regulate the tech sector when it comes to consumer data.
Welch said the agency, which would be developed through the Digital Platform Commission Act, would also help address cyber security concerns.
“We can’t keep up with all the changes and all the methodologies by which there is hacking…I think the time has come where we actually need an agency – a digital commission, much like say the FTC or the FCC, that is properly staffed, properly resourced, and has the capacity to keep up,” said Welch.
At the hearing, Welch also asked experts about how to help people and small businesses use affordable cybersecurity measures to keep their data safe.
