PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – The Plattsburgh birthplace of silent film actress Jean Arthur was damaged by fire Friday afternoon.
Plattsburgh firefighters responded to the fire at 94 Oak Street shortly after noon. Most of the fire was concentrated in the back of the three-story apartment building.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
Arthur was featured in three Frank Capra films — “Mr. Deeds Goes to Town,” “You Can’t Take it With You,” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.” Her Hollywood legacy includes an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in 1943.
A historic plaque was placed at the property back in 2015 in honor of Arthur.
