WASHINGTON (WCAX) – A New Hampshire senator is pushing a bill that would crack down on so-called deepfake porn.

The Biden administration is also pushing the tech industry to shut down this growing market of abusive sexual images created with artificial intelligence. Victims can be celebrities or even children.

There were reportedly more than 21,000 deepfake porn videos online last year, a 460% increase from the year before.

Now, lawmakers on Capitol Hill are also looking at bipartisan legislation co-sponsored by New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan that would impose fines and jail time on people who share those images online.

“It’s outrageous. And we need to make sure that our laws keep up with this new technology and that we protect individuals,” said Hassan, D-New Hampshire.

Vermont has passed a bill that would explicitly make deepfake porn a crime. It hasn’t been sent to the governor yet, though.
