MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (WCAX) – Middlebury is considering whether or not to charge for parking.

The town’s Selectboard recently held a retreat to discuss the parking issues across the downtown.

According to meeting documents, the town commissioned a study in 2012, which took an amount of total parking spaces, looked at patterns and came up with recommendations.

While the town didn’t move forward with those recommendations over a decade ago, the town is now considering implementing some such as more parking enforcement – metered parking and reducing the amount of time you can park at certain spots.

“There’s a lack of it, especially if you get some kind of college function or something major there’s no parking anyways but right here on park street its usually filled up everyday and its tough for people to park for sure,” Otter Creek Custom Framing owner Brian Ladeau said. “Even meters would be great, I feel they would have to have guidelines I think as far as setting how long you can park for, maybe a 15 minute parking or a 20 minute parking would be ideal.”

The study also looked at the fines for parking violations across the state – Middlebury had the lowest at just five dollars.
