BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Birders or boaters looking for loons are asked to keep their distance.

According to Vermont Fish and Wildlife, loons were taken off the endangered species list in 2005 – but humans can still disturb their breeding season.

Many nesting areas in the state are marked, but not all, so they ask boaters not to approach the birds.

Fish and Wildlife is also reminding anglers to avoid lead fish tackle, which kills loons by lead poisoning each year.
