BENNINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – Authorities are investigating what appears to be fragments of human remains dug up during construction on an old house in Bennington.

Workers for Al Clayton Construction Services said they had been repairing the foundation of a house off Route 9 in the old part of the city for the past six weeks and came across two bones on Thursday in a pile of debris.

The company’s owner, Al Clayton, said they looked similar to parts of a femur and vertebrae of a human skeleton. “I’m looking at them and it didn’t take long to recognize that, you know, they’re not an animal bone I’m familiar with. They were large bones but they looked familiar to human bones. I was as shocked enough where it was just do the next step, call a local official, brief the guys, ‘Okay, you got to move your direction, don’t mess with them,’” he said.

Clayton and authorities are waiting on results from the UVM Medical Center to confirm if the bones are human to see what the next steps will be.
