Families crowd Lebanon pool looking to cool off

LEBANON, N.H. (WCAX) – The city pool in Lebanon, New Hampshire, was packed with families looking to beat the heat on Wednesday.

The Veterans Memorial Pool has been open for just over a week. Residents of the city and nonresidents can get in with daily admission fees or season passes.

The pool is run by Lebanon Recreation, Arts, and Parks. Officials say it’s a crucial asset for the community, especially on hot days.

“Some people like to go to a swimming hole or the river or Boston Lot Reservoir, stuff like that. But to be able to go to a place where there are trained lifeguards, that is great peace of mind for people in the community when you don’t have many options to go and cool off in a place like the pool,” said Paul Coats of Lebanon Recreation, Arts, and Parks.

Public pools across the country are experiencing lifeguard staffing shortages forcing many to stay closed, but Lebanon city officials say their pool is fully staffed. They attribute that to wage increases for their lifeguards.

The public pool in Montpelier opened ahead of its official season for people in that community to cool off.
