Vt. lawmakers sue governor over ed secretary interim appointment

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Two Democratic lawmakers are suing Governor Phil Scott over the appointment of Zoie Saunders as interim education secretary.

The governor made the appointment this spring despite the Senate’s 19 to 9 vote against her nomination to education secretary.

Vermont Digger reports that a lawsuit was filed Thursday by Senators Tanya Vyhovsky, D-Chittenden County, and Dick McCormack, D-Windsor County.

They allege the governor “purposefully circumvented” the Senate’s authority to confirm or deny cabinet appointments as enshrined in the Vermont Constitution.
