MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Some Vermont car dealerships are among those grappling with a nationwide cyberattack
Dealerships across the country use software from a firm called CDK for servicing, parts, financing, and more. The company this week announced they were the victim of a cyber-attack affecting 15,000 dealerships nationwide.
With their systems offline, many dealerships have to conduct sales and service with pen and paper. Matt Cota with the Vermont Vehicle and Automotive Distributors Association says a recent state law would alert top law enforcement if personal data was hacked.
“There are protocols at the state level and the federal level to inform the attorney general’s office and consumers if there is a data breach,” he said. “We just know that there are a handful of car dealers who don’t have the same access to software that they had at the beginning of the week.”
CDK has not said when services will be back online but has indicated it could be several days. For prospective car buyers, that may mean delays at dealerships or vehicle orders.
