Torrential rain across region triggers flooding, damages roads

STOWE, Vt. (WCAX) – Torrential rain ripped through our region over the weekend, washing out roads and leaving damage in its wake.

WCAX News viewers shared videos and photos of what they saw with us. Watch the video to see.

In South Walden, the rain had Haynesville Brook roaring, bringing mud and debris through the small stream.

In Stowe, drivers found themselves on a partially flooded Route 100, and washouts badly damaged several roads.

Now, the cleanup and repairs begin. Monday morning, WCAX crews captured work beginning on North Hollow Road.

Sheila Goss of Stowe said the damage was hard to see.

Sheila Goss: My husband drives up and down it every day, too, and we’ve never seen it like this.

Reporter Sophia Thomas: Not even last summer?

Sheila Goss: Not even last summer, no. No, we saw other parts of town that got it really bad, but we were up on a hill so we escaped most of the flooding problems. But this is something, we’ve never seen it like this before, so we are just aghast.

Stowe’s fire chief said crews are working to fix the roads but they might not be open for a couple days.

Much of the damage was on local roads. Closures or partial closures have been reported in Stowe and Bolton. New England 511 is also reporting a road closure in Worcester at the Elmore line due to washouts and water over the road.
