Northeast State Correctional Facility inmate attempts to escape custody

ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont State Police say an inmate at the northwest state correctional facility tried to escape last week.

Officers say on June 17th, 30-year-old Nicolelus Sanborn was being escorted to the hospital for a medical issue. When they were leaving the hospital, corrections officers say Sanborn attempted to flee from custody after the door of the transport van was not properly secured.

They say he only made it 20 feet before falling, as he was restrained in handcuffs and leg shackles.

Sanborn has been in custody since June 10th, when he was arrested for retail theft and assaulting an officer in Burlington.

He is now also facing a felony charge of attempted escape. He is set to be arraigned on August 6th.
