Vermont requests aid for 2 counties following damaging June storms

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Vermont officials are looking for a disaster declaration following flooding in Caledonia and Lamoille counties.

A series of strong thunderstorms swept through the region on June 23, washing out some roads.

Vermont Emergency Management Director Eric Forand submitted a request for a Preliminary Damage Assessment from FEMA to see if the state qualifies for a disaster declaration.

Emergency management officials say the damage will cost more than $1.5 million to repair, more than the threshold for FEMA funding. That includes road repairs, debris removal and contractor expenses.

The assessments are expected next week.
