PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WCAX) – Organizers of the Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration say they need more help to keep the tradition alive.
The 1814 Commemoration Incorporated says they’re looking for the next generation to fill the void to help plan for the annual event.
They say their numbers have dwindled over the years with only about a dozen or so volunteers that organize and fundraise for the event.
This September will be the 26th year of the event, but they say it could be one of the last if they’re unable to pass the torch.
“As much as you love doing and want to keep the history going, the smaller and smaller the group gets, the less chance of that happening. So, there’s a good chance it could end,” said Tom Donahue of 1814 Commemoration Inc.
The nonprofit is teaming up with the 4-H Club to give kids a hands-on lesson in history with reenactments, field trips to historic sites and a chance to be part of the Battle of Plattsburgh commemoration.
