ST. ALBANS, Vt. (WCAX) – Almost three dozen new homes for older adults are going up in St. Albans.
Contractors broke ground Wednesday on Reid Commons, an independent living residence for adults 55 and older.
The apartment building will offer a range of rents for mixed-income tenants.
Cathedral Square, a property management company that serves disabled and older adults, will own the building. CEO Kim Fitzgerald says with 1,100 people already on the waiting list, this is just the beginning of addressing the housing crisis for older adults in Franklin County.
“The affordability piece is so important, especially for people as they’re aging because most of them are living on fixed incomes. And so it’s really important that they know they can live somewhere they can afford, so they’re not having to choose between paying for medications, their housing or food,” Fitzgerald said.
Builders expect to finish the project next July.
