New Welch bill would bring $55M to Lake Champlain conservation efforts

COLCHESTER, Vt. (WCAX) – More money could be on the way to help protect Lake Champlain.

Vermont Sen. Peter Welch announced a bill on Monday in Colchester called the Lake Champlain Basin Program Reauthorization Act that would bring $55 million for projects that promote conservation.

Welch says the act would strengthen the Lake Champlain Basin Program and help Vermont, New York and Canada work together to maintain the natural resource.

“Sometimes people will ask me why we spend money on this. We spend money on this because it’s our heritage. This lake was clean. This lake has a lot of use. This lake, it’s a– it’s a miracle of nature. And it’s one of the wonders of the world as far as we’re concerned,” said Welch, D-Vermont.

The Lake Champlain Basin Program has been around since 1992. It focuses on protecting lake ecosystems.
