New affordable apartments for families open in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – New multifamily affordable housing has officially opened in Burlington.

The ribbon was cut on the new building located just behind the COTS Main Street family shelter on Monday morning.

COTS Main Street Family Housing includes 16 permanently affordable apartments for families who used to live in emergency shelters or motels.

It’s part of a partnership between the homelessness agency COTS and the nonprofit housing group Evernorth.

The units are designed to give families living in emergency shelters or motels access to permanent housing and services like affordable child care until they are in a position to move on to other housing.

“As families settle in, their dreams and ambitions will continue to be nurtured by the amazing team at COTS. The BHA vouchers allow families to move on when they’re ready to follow their dreams. And the teamwork that goes into all of this nurturing is amazing,” said Jonathan Farrell, the executive director of COTS.

All 16 units are already full.

The total price tag rang in at $8.4 million thanks to significant donors, ARPA and tax credit equity funds. Part of the new building was paid for with federal money secured in part by Sen. Peter Welch.
