MORRISTOWN, Vt. (WCAX) – Teens in Morristown are working on a mural this week to honor their town with the help of a special visitor.
Out of all of Vermont, a muralist looking to leave her mark in a small town in every state landed in Morristown.
“I want it to be a unique place, whether that’s a small business or an organization that is doing something very cool for their community, or just a small town that maybe a lot of people haven’t heard of before,” visiting muralist Cheyenne Renee said.
The town already had a beautification project underway making them a perfect fit.
Stephanie Drews-Sheldon, the executive director of River Arts, the organization collaborating with Renee, agrees.
“I think Morristown really puts a lot of emphasis on public art. There’s so many artists in this area that already invest in that,” Drews-Sheldon said.
Renee makes every mural unique to the place it represents. Vermont’s will reflect its historic railway.
Usually, Renee works alone, but in Morristown, she’s joined by an enthusiastic crowd of teens attending the River Arts camp.
“I love art. I love drawing. I take a sketchbook wherever I go, and this is just a bigger scale. It’s just going to be cool to be able to say that I helped with something like that,” said Elias Burke, 12.
The mural will be displayed on a manufacturing building along the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail, the town’s hot spot.
Local kids hope the project helps people learn about their hometown and state.
“I like to pour onto the mural things that remind me of Vermont, so a lot of green, blue. I think we’re going to add some mountains maybe, which would be really cool,” said Theodora Veve, 11.
Community members can add to the mural, too, at the August Wednesday Night Lives in Oxbow Park.
