ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. (WCAX) –
The city of Essex Junction is branching out to Vermonters to find the best tree within city limits.
Throughout the entire month of September, the Essex Junction Tree Advisory Committee is throwing the ‘greatest tree contest.’
“Anyone is eligible, the only requirement is that the tree needs to be in Essex Junction,” said Rich Boyer, a member on the Tree Advisory Board. “Last year, we had 15 entries, which was a good beginning, but we’re trying to increase that and get the word out for sure.”
Boyer adds that the goal of the contest is for people to recognize the value trees have on the environment, such as combatting climate change, reducing erosion, and providing habitat for wildlife. However, he notes the emotional impact trees can have on people as well.
“We also recognize that many people, their appreciation of trees is rooted in an emotional connection, so we wanted to give people an opportunity to identify the significance of trees in their lives.”
Boyer says entries must highlight why they think the tree is best, with many people focusing on the aesthetic, while others share personal stories.
Once all nominations have been received, Boyer and the Tree Advisory Committee will tour all the entries, with winners being announced in October. The first-place winner gets a $100 gift card, and two runners-up will each get $50 gift cards sponsored by Northfield Savings Bank.
Entry forms can be found at the City Offices at 2 Lincoln Street, Brownell Library, or Essex Junction Recreation and Parks. Paper forms can be returned to the City Offices. You can also enter the contest online.
